Željpoh Building in Zagreb – Discussions on Architectural Interpolation

The book is an overview of the history of construction and reception pf Željpoh building in Zagreb designed by Stanko Fabris . The history of Maršal Tito Square, where the building was erected is presented through Historicist design of the square, monumental architecture and the space in the north side of the square which for decades remained unbuilt. The prehistory of the building construction comprises several designs made from 1911 to 1938 by esteemed Croatian architects (Ehrlich, Albini, Kauzlarić, Carnelutti, Ebert, Denzler, Turina). After WWII a new generation of modernist architects considered both interpolation and the construction of new large-scale structures in the vicinity of the building to the detriment of the existing historical structures (Ibler, Turina, Rašica, Vitić). The book also brings the history of the reception and criticism of Fabris' design for the Željpoh building which facilitated the formation of theoretical syntheses on interpolation even before the ICOMOS charter of 1972 on introduction of contemporary architecture into ancient groups of buildings.
