As the first comprehensive guide to Zagreb's architecture, this book's concept is that of a general architectural guide. A limited selection of 100 anthological architectural examples contains the outstanding works according to the common opinion of architectural professionals. The number of the selected buildings is obviously too small to cover all buildings that deserve to be put on the list but far greater than an average visitor to Zagreb is able to see in few days. This selection encompasses the architecture from all periods: from the Early Romanesque layers of the first late 11th century cathedral to the buildings completed in 2011. Care has been taken to present various types of architecture and as many relevant architects as possible. The book presents the most significant buildings in central Zagreb as well as the newly developed areas on the fringe of the city which have only recently been affected by urban sprawl and where high-quality contemporary architecture is a recent phenomenon.
