Biography

Born on 1 January 1955, holder of a Bachelor and Master in Architecture degree, doctor of technical sciences in architecture and urban planning, scientific advisor, certified architect - planner, certified landscape architect, certified for working on cultural goods. He is a full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and a full member of the Croatian Academy of Engineering.
He earned his bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb (1979), his master's degree from the Faculty of Forestry in Zagreb (1986) and his doctoral degree from the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb (1989). He pursued professional development in Italy as an Italian government scholarship recipient (1986).
His teaching and research activities are focused on the subject of historical development of towns, urban planning, landscape architecture and cultural heritage restoration. In addition to the Faculty of Architecture (undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programmes) he also teaches courses at the Faculty of Forestry (undergraduate programme) and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (graduate programme) of the University of Zagreb.
He heads the "Urban and Spatial Models for Revival and Enhancement of Cultural Heritage" - HERU / Heritage Urbanism (2014-2018) scientific project financed by the Croatian Science Foundation. In the past he headed three Croatian scientific projects and actively participated in European projects as the head / research coordinator in Croatia. He is a supervisor of 14 doctoral disertations, 10 scientific master's and 26 master's theses, as well as advisor to 10 junior researchers and three foreign scholarship recipients.
He has published about 140 papers in Croatia and abroad. He has written seven books, which received recognizability in Croatia, and some also abroad. He has published about 50 professional and 60 papers for the popularization of profession. He has authored/co-authored about 140 professional projects - spatial plans, master plans, urban development plans, detailed urban plans, landscape/garden studies and preliminary and detailed designs of landscape architecture.
He was awarded the State government award for science for the popularisation and promotion of science (1998), the award of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (2004) and the Fran Bošnjaković award by the University of Zagreb (2017). He is an honorary member of the Society of Architects of Zagreb (2015). Faculty of Forestry, University of Zagreb awarded him a Charter for special contribution to the development and promotion of the forestry profession (2014).
In his many media appearances (print, radio, television) he has promoted the preservation, restoration and revival of cultural heritage and sustainable physical and urban planning. He has participated in about 70 radio and about 50 television programmes. His books and papers have been reviewed in about 270 reviews in journals, the print, on radio and television, including fifty abroad.
