This course examines, analyzes and interprets twentieth century Croatian architecture. The lecture system is based on chronological presentation of anthological works and specific thematic units of the same period of Croatian architecture. Lectures bring the factual overview and interprets in a problematic manner the phenomenon of Croatian architecture. The sociopolitical context of the corresponding period
of time and place, and not only local but broather European and world tendencies, will be used as a framework of stylistic and special features of the current thematic unit.
Along with the factual overview, students will be presented with the creative, initial layer of each of the architects modus operandi, which is the precondition of evolution of creative individuality. Therefore, each architectual work is viewed within its initial spatial concept and compared to its realised physical manifestation in the classical synthesis: structure – form - function. Starting points of the architectural analysis include broather spatial, topographic or urbanistic aspects, stylistic and artistic context of the corresponding time, authentic values and position an individual work of architecture within the evolving journey of each architect's individuality. Adopted material becomes student's collection of knowledge and referent memory of Croatian architectural and cultural space. Also, superimposed, each work of architecture helps to construct the fundus of Croatian architecture as a segment of spatio-temporal unlimited cultural relationship in the field of architecture. Each of the student's seminar prepared for this course is directly associated with the scientific project „Atlas of the twentieth century Croatian architecture“, and becomes each student's contribution to the projects database.
